Backup all your files before changing your firmware. First you need to root your Galaxy S in order to change the firmware. How to root Samsung Galaxy S
(i) Make it sure that your device is currently running with the firmware XXJVT. If you are not sure then go to settings and select firmware version where you will get to know the firmware version currently running in your device.
(ii) You can easily root your Samsung Galaxy S to get Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3. First of all download XXJVU rooting files from this link (http://hotfile.com/dl/140826161/d96b370/CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS.rar.html). Keep all these files on your desktop and enter the passcode as shown in the image.

(iii) You can start to root Samsung Galaxy S with download mode by following the step given below.
Download mode= hold volume down key+ ok button
For the third time hold both the button with power button.
(iv) Now connect your device to laptop or any system. You can see some popup windows as shown in figure.
(v) Choose the PDA file CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS from Odin extracted files. Click start to root Samsung Galaxy S.
(vi) After completion of rooting process your device is ready for rebooting process. Switch off the Smartphone to get into recovery mode again.
(vii) Select all the given files in recovery mode to start reboot process:
Wipe data/ factory reset
Wipe cache partition
And finally select the option reboot system now.

Update and install ICS for your Samsung Galaxy S
(i) Download all the files of Android 4.0.3 Ice cream sandwich build 15 via this link (http://hotfile.com/dl/143990616/0c11756/update-cm-9.0.0-RC0-GalaxyS-KANG-BUILD15-signed.zip.html). After getting all these files connect your Samsung Galaxy S to the system. Transfer all these files to your phone or memory card. After transferring all your files disconnect your Smartphone.
(ii) Switch off the Phone then go back to recovery mode. In recovery mode perform following steps.
Install zip from SD card.
Choose zip from SD card.
Select Android 4.0.3 ICS build 15 packages.
(iii) Turn on your Smartphone. Again switch it off to again get back to recovery mode. From here you can wipe data by selecting factory reset option and then wipe cache partition.
(iv) Choose the option reboot system now to get your Samsung Galaxy S back into work.
